For quite a while I have wanted to check out the new 3d tools in Photoshop and have tried, unsuccessfully, to do so myself. So I decided to delve into Rafiq Elmansy’s “Photoshop 3D for Animators” (Focal Press) and I am glad that I did. The book is well written and easy to understand. It takes you through some basic 3d concepts and then takes you step by step through the many 3d tools that Photoshop now has to offer.

This book offers a concept then goes through a lesson which explains each concept thoroughly. It also offers great tips on setting up preferences and how you can integrate with other programs. And let’s face it, who wants someone that can just do one program these days, so being able to set up so that you can professionally integrate with an After Effects or Flash work flow is ideal. The accompanying cd is great. The only criticism I have is that the book really needs to be worked through from start to finish, which for me was perfect. It isn’t really a reference book, but more of a working book, so if that is what you are looking for, this is definitely the book to get.
